Igor' Kontorovich
The University of Auckland Auckland, New Zealand

Speech Title: Mathematics learning in the digital era: challenges and opportunities

I
gor' Kontorovich aims to enrich, critique, and diversify mathematics education. His research is concerned with processes of mathematics teaching in different learning environments, aiming to offer theoretically grounded and empirically tested insights about how these processes can be understood and potentially improved. The insights often emerge from research partnerships with school teachers and research mathematicians. Igor's collaborative projects with scholars from Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, and the UK have been generously funded by numerous international agencies. The projects' findings have been communicated in just over a hundred research publications.

Her work has characterized students’ learning practices in technology-enhanced learning environments and explored affordances of multiple representations for science teaching and learning. Her research team has developed computer-based assessments to investigate secondary school students’ inquiry competences and examined teachers’ beliefs and attitudes towards technology-based assessments. She is also collaborating with researchers and educators in early childhood to design project-based inquiry modules to support young children’s STEM learning.

Professor Wu’s research has been recognized in several ways. In April 2008, she received the Early Career Award from the USA-based National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST). The award is given annually to the early researcher who demonstrates the greatest potential to make outstanding and continuing contributions to research in science education. She also received the Outstanding Research Award from the National Science Council of Taiwan in 2009 and the Outstanding Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan in 2014 and 2017.
